16.10.16 Bayliss Cup
The Bayliss Cup mixed pairs greensome stableford competition was held on Sunday, 16th October, 2016, in very autumnal weather of occasional sun, strong gusts of wind and heavy downpours. Ladies drove off from odd numbered red tees and gentlemen on even numbered yellow tees.
8 teams took part.
Congratulations to Christine Jones and Denzil Jones, who were the winners with 36 points.
(Well done to Kath who had to drive off the 12th and 14th yellow tee when her partner fluffed his drive!)
Everyone who took part said that they had enjoyed playing in a mixed competition, and hopefully more can be incorporated into the fixture book for 2017.
Thanks to Sue Hughes for bringing cupcakes for everyone following a lovely meal prepared by Sian and her team.

07.09.16 Executive committee meetings open to members
In view of a few recent events, comments and situations the Executive Committee feels that an invitation should be extended to invite any member to attend and listen in to their meetings. It would hopefully provide the membership with an insight into the administrative issues/problems etc in the running of such an establishment. The attendee will be present to listen into the meeting but not to contribute and may at times be asked to leave the room if something of a delicate/data protection issue has to be discussed.
This new facility we hope would also show transparency on the Club's behalf and provide reassurance to the membership that any decision is made with the full intention of bettering/improving the Club. The dates and times etc. will be posted in plenty of time for the members to be aware
07.08.16 St Deiniol ladies take on Caernarfon ladies, and Mother Nature!
Our intrepid Ladies team headed off to Caernarfon this afternoon for their final Shield Match of the season. Although the weather stayed dry, the wind was strong and gusty in places, with no let up for the entire 18 holes.
The course was in great condition and our team was ready to take on the team that scored a half at Bangor 2 weeks earlier.
First out was Mari, followed by Sue H, Martina, Gill and Janet. All fought the wind, some more successfully than others!
Wins were obtained by Mari and Sue but it wasn't to be St. Deiniol's day and we lost the match 3/2.
Following the match, both teams tucked into a superb Sunday roast dinner, which everyone enjoyed.
Final results will not be known for a while so we must sit tight and hope we have done enough to gain promotion to Div 3. Watch this space.
Fantastic Charity Day Effort
St Deiniol member Sue Hughes and her husband Glyn Hughes (Mr Captain) combined Captain’s Charity Day and the Annual Colour Day to present the Captain’s Colour Day. Some 8 months in the planning, preparations started in October 2015, when Sue’s Mother celebrated her 100th birthday, having been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s 5 years earlier. Sue was determined to organise a fundraising competition at the club for the Alzheimer’s Society in North Wales. Sponsors for all 18 holes were more than generous and their financial contributions started the ball rolling. Anne Lloyd Jones crafted the sponsor signs which were installed on the tees throughout the course by Mr Bob Thomas. Additionally, many local and National businesses supported the day by providing raffle prizes and auction items. Also, Golf Clubs from England, Eiré, Scotland and Wales provided 4 ball vouchers as prizes and auction items. St Deiniol Golf Club and Alzheimer’s Society thank them for their generosity in supporting the event.
Some 150 golfers participated in a Better Ball Stableford competition on the day. The weather was perfect and many volunteers gave up their time to make the day a success. The day commenced early with our greenkeeping staff Paul Roberts and Jamie Williams checking the course after many weeks of hard work to present the course in great condition following a very wet winter. Volunteers, Siân Thomas, Janet Davies and Sue Evans inflated charity balloons and decorated the 20 buggies due to go on the course throughout the day. Additional help was provided by the remaining members of the ladies section, Sue Jones, Chris Jones, Mari Roberts, Gill Foster, Mary Oliver, Kath Evans, Nia Williams and Lorrie Murphy selling Raffle Tickets and Alzheimer’s merchandise, and running the ‘guess how many balls in the bucket’ competition, as well as providing informative literature on Alzheimer’s disease. Martina Lahmann took charge of the putting challenge and provided a golf ball personalisation service. A slide show of sponsor’s logos played in the lounge throughout the day to music written especially to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s. There were also a number of donations from members.
On the 8th tee, we had a halfway refreshment stop, courtesy of Mr Captain. This was managed throughout the day by Alan Crane, Geraint Hughes and his children, Ceri Roscoe-Roberts and her children, and Mr Bob and Mrs Sandra Thomas and their granddaughter. Golfers were able to have a fun photograph taken on the tee in a stand up cut-out, thanks to a frame constructed with help from father and son, Paul and Liam Williams. Play commenced at 08:00am and was continuous until the last group finished at 8:00pm.
The evening event commenced with a short speech by Mr Captain and the event organiser Sue Hughes thanking everyone who contributed to the day. Special thanks were extended to Sian Hughes and Paul Thomas for their contribution to our fund raising efforts; donating money from the Easter Egg Raffle earlier in the year, and the sale of cupcakes and breakfast baps on the day. Our resident M C, Mr Wyn Williams, and Mr Captain then conducted the prize presentation.
Pete Hennessey and Steve Rogerson-Williams carded a magnificent 46 points to win the competition, closely followed by Vince Hill and Stuart Slaney on 45 points, visitors Andrew Walls and Martin Pritchard on 44 points, Gareth Wyn Jones and Adam Jones also on 44 points, Chris Ward and Liam Williams with 43 points, Siôn Morris and Wyn Morris also with 43 points and Paul S Roberts and Paul V Williams with 42 points. Nearest the pin prizes were offered on 5 of the 6 par 3’s and these were won by visitor Mr K Toon on the 4th hole, Dyfed Davies on the 7th hole, David Jones on the 8th hole, visitor Mr R Humphreys-Jones on the 10th and Michelle Rowlands on the 15th hole. Spot prizes were won by Paul M Roberts for the longest drive on the 6th hole, Gareth W Jones for the nearest the line on the 12th hole, visitor Martin Pritchard for nearest the pin in 3 shots on the 14th hole, Llewelyn Tooes for nearest the pin in 3 shots on the 18th hole. Kevin Roberts correctly guessed that there were 489 golf balls in the box, and visitor Mr K Toon achieved perfection in the putting challenge at his first attempt.
After the presentation, many items generously donated were raffled off. Mr Wyn Williams conducted an auction and raised £1622.00 for the charity. ‘The Levee Breaks’ entertained us with their music until late into the evening.
One month later, Sue and Mr Captain presented Ruth Owen, Chief Fundraising Officer for Alzheimer’s Society, a final payment of £5,055.00, a magnificent sum of money for a very worthwhile cause.

Saturday, 28th May, 2016, a bright, still, perfect Spring day and 112 players (ladies and gentlemen, members and visitors) in teams of 4 stepped Ahopefully and optimistically onto a picturesque St. Deiniol golf course. The scenery was spectacular, as was the golf at times. The format was Texas Scramble, four drives for each member of the team to be noted on the scorecard. The weather during the day was ideal, plenty of sunshine, no wind, and just one short sharp shower during the early afternoon, which didn't affect the lovely happy atmosphere around the course at all. Congratulations to Paul Roberts, head greenkeeper, and his hard-working team for getting the course to the condition it's in now after the awful wet and cold weather we've suffered for many months.
The President had her hospitality stand on the 8th tee, where various liquid refreshments and snacks were available to all players who passed her by. She was assisted in the afternoon by Bryn Evans, Lady Captains' husband, who tended the bar, replenished the pork pie plate and reminded President to take photographs when she was chatting too much!
Nearest to the pin was on the 8th hole, the tee giving an ideal vantage point. Christine Jones' ball was close to the pin, and looked unbeatable, but then Derfel Roberts in the following team hit his ball down the left hand side of the fairway, and expertly ran it onto the green to cries from the audience watching on the 8th tee to "get in the hole!!" but it didn't. However, it was close enough to beat all other attempts.
Nearest to the line on the 12th was our Mr. Chairman, Nick Williams, who inched closer than Ron Evans who had held the honour for a while.
Results of the competition are as follows:
1st Adam Jones, David W. Jones, Gareth W. Jones and Ben Jones.
£30 golf shop vouchers each.
2nd B. Carter, D. Wild, B. Roberts and N. Roberts
£25 golf shop vouchers each.
3rd H. Griffiths, G.A. Roberts, P.M. Roberts and E. Angel.
£20 golf shop vouchers each.
Many thanks to Sue Hughes, our match secretary for checking the score cards as the teams came in. There were two disqualifications. One team was disqualified for unfortunately not having handicaps on their card, and the other team was disquaified for not getting 4 drives in for each team member.
Presentations were held at the Clubhouse in the evening, and following this, everyone present had a lovely meal prepared by Sian Hughes, Club stewardess, and her team. Entertainment was provided by Mr. Captain, Glyn Hughes, and Alun Davies, both very able guitarists, with enthusiastic vocal audience participation.
Janet Davies, Club President, would like to thank everyone who played in the competition, and also everyone who came to the presentations in the evening, for their support, and for making the day such a success. Many thanks also to our Vice-Presidents for their financial support. A raffle during the evening raised £90. Proceeds from the day will go towards a fund for renovating the mens' conveniences in the Clubhouse, which are in dire need of refurbishment.
18.05.16 St Deiniol Ladies v Pwllheli Ladies
Congratulations to St Deiniol Ladies on winning their first shield match of the 2016 season by beating Pwllheli ladies on their own turf.
Initial doubts about the weather were proved to be unfounded as the team arrived to see the course bathed in warm sunshine, vastly different weather from their first attempt to play Pwllheli last year. With St Deiniol's first 3 ladies giving shots to the opposition and the remaining 2 ladies playing scratch, they set off, hopeful of being able to repeat last years win.
Congratulations to Sue Hughes (3/2), Martina Lahmann (4/2), and Gill Foster (5/4) for securing the team win, but special congratulations go to Mari Roberts for her incredible hole in one on the par 3 12th!! As is customary, all the ladies enjoyed a drink on Mari!!
A great start to the season ladies, keep up the good work!!

08.04.16 The 101st. AGM was held at the clubhouse on Good Friday
The 101st. AGM was held at the clubhouse on Good Friday, we would like to thank the outgoing Captain Medwyn Roberts for all he has done and the enthusiastic manner in which he undertook his duties.
We would like to welcome Glyn Hughes as our new captain, and wish him luck and success and assure him of all our support.
We would like thank Mike Bryant for his tireless work as Chairman over the last 6 interesting and challenging years. During this time he has been a great asset to the club both internally, and with his work to promote the game externally, and in bringing our name to the fore with the County Union whilst also representing us on the WGU.
The incoming Chairman is Nick Williams and he would like to thank everyone who has been re elected for the work they have done, and for the valued contributions that they will make this year. Also we welcome to the Executive Derfel Roberts as Greens Chairman and Alun Davies as House Chairman both undertaking busy roles and we should back them as they put their own stamp on things. We also welcome Sue Hughes as Match/Games Secretary and ask that every support is given to her and that ideas and feedback are offered.
We are now looking forward to a very successful year.
06.04.16 Fantastic feedback from a couple of visitors to our course
Hi Tec & Glyn,
Thank you all very much for making us so welcome when we played your course on Thursday. We very much enjoyed your course and the views were magnificent (our golf less so!!). We hope if any of your members ever play our 1906 course (Stanton on the Wolds), they will be as warmly received as we were.

04.04.16 Report of the Captain's Drive In 2nd April 2016
On a very wet Saturday morning, numerous members braved the elements to join me at the Captain's Drive In. I finally managed to get my drive off the 1st tee after Derec's extended photo shoot! Having selected my trusty 5 wood, I hit a tremendous drive, and was relieved that it passed the ladies tee! After several members attempted to drive their golf ball closest to mine, Eilir Angel was declared the winner, and he received a prize of a bottle of 8 year old whisky. I decided to make the competition a 17 hole comp so everyone could drive off the 1st tee and then go directly to the 2nd tee so as to avoid any delay when the Drive In finished. I was also proud to have my son, Geraint, my grandson, Iestyn, and my wife Sue, all join me in driving off the 1st.
The course was very wet for those golfers playing in the morning because of heavy overnight rain, but despite the poor conditions, 42 members took part and several members posted very good scores. The winner was Euron Jones with 38 points, just pipping Andrew Hughes, also with 38 points, into 2nd place after countback. Dafydd Pritchard took 3rd spot with 37 points.
My thanks go to my wife Sue who worked tirelessly throughout the whole day collecting the competition fees, selling raffle tickets and a fundraising scratch card, to raise funds for the club, and also sorting all the completed scorecards. The competition raised £66 after paying out prize money, and the raffle and scratch card raised a further £94, making £160 in total for the club. A list of raffle prize winners is posted on the clubhouse lounge noticeboard. Prizes can be collected from the shop
I would like to thank all the members who supported me today and hope you will continue to support me throughout the coming year.
Club Captain 2016
31.03.16 New Club Captain 2016/17 - Mr. Glyn Hughes
CLUB CAPTAIN'S SPEECH
I would like to accept the Club’s invitation to become the Club Captain for this year. It will be a great privilege and honour to represent the Club and it’s members in the forthcoming year.
I have been a member here since 1990 when I took up golf at 34 years of age and I have not mastered the game to date. One aspect I noticed about the club was the friendliness here, and I was made very welcome by the members. I enjoyed the old Winter League playing golf with different people and getting to know the rules and etiquette.
My son Geraint became a member as a Junior and I was very proud of him becoming Club Champion on a number of occasions, and representing the Club at County level. He also held the Course Record of 62 for a while before being toppled by our Head Greenkeeper Paul Roberts with a 61.
I hope to have a good year and I pray for better weather than Medwyn had last year with a record amount of rainfall, I just hope we don’t have a hosepipe ban this Summer!
I have a few dates for your calendars.
18/6/16 Captain’s Charity Day, to raise funds for The Alzheimer’s Society, which is a very worthy cause.
2/7/16 Captain’s Day which was originally planned for mid-July but as I was approached by a number of members who had arranged an outing elsewhere on that date, and who wanted to support me on my Captain’s Day, I have agreed to re-arrange the event so that they could play.
18/7/16 will be Invitation Day
My Drive-In will be at 11:00am next Saturday 2nd April, where I hope to drive the ball further than the Ladies Tee!
This will be followed by an Individual Stableford Competition which will be on all day for those who cannot make the Drive-In. Prizes will be presented in the evening. Please make every effort to attend if you can.
I will also have a Shotgun competition once a month from May to August and I hope you can attend. Prizes will be presented, after play, in the Spike Bar.
The Course has taken a hammering over the last 4 months, as all Courses in this area have been affected. Paul and his team have done a great job and I think we need to be patient and I am sure that our Course will be one of the best in the area. Several positive comments have been made by visitors and bookings for this year are already looking good.
I would also like to congratulate Paul Roberts on his appointment as the County Captain this year, and I wish him and his team of players every success in the future.
I also have to congratulate my Norman Brookes Team who retained the league title yet again this year after defeating Conwy on their Course, and with one game still to play. Well done boys, no pressure for the Vice-Captain this year then!
I hope that this will be a good year for me and the Club, and we can have a good turnout for the presentation nights where we will have entertainment as well.
I would like you all to join me in a drink at the bar after the meeting is closed, to celebrate my appointment.
22.03.16 The First Green

07.03.16 Fantastic News - Norman Brooke's League Winners
We have just had confirmation that Bangor St. Deiniol are the Norman Brooke's league winners yet again. Tonight we have had confirmation from the organiser that we have won with 14 points and still 1 match to play at Old Colwyn. Congratulations to GLYN and all the lads involved in this terrific achievement.
11.02.16 Drainage Works 2016
Due to recent weather and the last 2 Winters we have had to approach drainage face on. We’ve applied chemicals, Earthquaked, VertiDrained, Slit, Hollowcored and more recently applied the Air2g2 machine.
The above is standard procedure with exception of the Air2g2 machine and Earthquaking. All of the above have had positive affect on our soil structure and profile, these procedures will continue and become the ‘norm’ in our program to aid aeration.
But, we feel that some greens need a little more help! Certain greens have historically held water and in fact been designed to do so (no irrigation during summer months my years ago) Therefore, following an extremely kind gesture off a member- who will loan us a digger and a man, plus some materials. We have decided to except the offer with open arms and go ahead with the plan below. The cost to the Club will still be considerable regards materials such as soil, sand, stone and time.
Hopefully, pending all materials are on site and the infrastructure is all good then work will commence week starting 15th February. Their is no time scale given on the work but nothing will be rushed and the attention to detail will be premium. This in turn will aid recovery and get the areas back in play ASAP. Temp greens will likely be in play during workings.
The Committee and Officials thank you in advance for your understanding and patience during this period.
